Single Malt

Single malt Scotch is whisky made at a single distillery using only malted barley, water, and yeast, distilled in traditional copper pot stills. Because it comes from one place, each bottle carries the distinct character of its distillery. Flavors vary wildly across Scotland, ranging from light, grassy, and honeyed drams to rich, sherry-cask-sweetened spirits, all the way to heavy, smoky whiskies scented with peat.

When choosing a bottle, look at the region and the aging details on the label. Speyside and Highland malts tend to be smoother and fruitier, while Islay malts are famous for their intense, medicinal smoke. The age statement tells you the youngest whisky in the bottle, but also look for the cask type—sherry, bourbon, or port casks dramatically shape the final flavor. Enjoy it neat, with a splash of water to open up the aromas, or alongside dark chocolate and strong cheeses.
