American whiskey is a diverse family of spirits distilled from grains like corn, rye, barley, and wheat, almost always aged in oak barrels. Bourbon, made mostly from corn, offers sweet notes of vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak. Rye whiskey leans into spicy, peppery, and herbal flavors. The biggest variation across the category comes from the "mash bill"—the specific recipe of grains used—and how long the liquid spends maturing in the wood.

When choosing a bottle, look at the label for clues. "Straight" means the whiskey has aged for at least two years with no added color or flavor. A higher "proof" or "cask strength" designation indicates a bolder, more intense spirit that stands up well to ice or cocktails.
