Imperial Stout

Imperial stout is the biggest, boldest style in the dark beer family. Originally brewed extra-strong to survive the journey from England to the Baltic states, these are rich, deeply roasted ales. When you pour one, expect a thick, near-black liquid with intense flavours of dark chocolate, espresso, and dark fruits. The main variation across the category is sweetness; some are dry and bitter, while others are sweet and velvety.

When choosing a bottle, check the alcohol by volume (ABV) and look for specialty ingredients on the label. Traditional versions rely purely on roasted malts, but modern "pastry stouts" often feature additions like vanilla, coconut, or coffee. Many are also aged in spirit casks, which adds complex notes of bourbon or oak. These are slow-sipping beers, best enjoyed at room temperature on a cold evening, paired with rich chocolate desserts or strong blue cheeses.
