Pilsner is the crisp, golden style of lager that originally put pale beer on the global map. Born in the Czech city of Plzeň, it is defined by its bright clarity, lively carbonation, and a distinct hop character. Unlike more generic pale lagers, a true pilsner balances its clean, bready malt base with a noticeable, refreshing bitterness.

When choosing a bottle, look for regional styles. Czech-style pilsners (often labeled 'Světlý Ležák') tend to be slightly richer, with a soft malt sweetness and spicy Saaz hops. German pilsners are typically drier, lighter in body, and have a more pronounced, herbal bitterness. For a modern twist, look out for 'Italian-style' pilsners, which are dry-hopped for an extra burst of fresh aroma.
