The story behind it
Founded in 1871 by Jan-Leonard Moortgat, the brewery remains an independent, family-owned business passionate about traditional Belgian brewing methods. To celebrate the end of World War I, the beer was originally named 'Victory Ale' before a local shoemaker famously declared it a 'true devil' (Duvel), inspiring its permanent name.
Duvel Moortgat Brewery, founded in Breendonk, utilizes a unique multi-step fermentation process that includes warm maturation and secondary fermentation in the bottle. This method, combined with original yeast strains imported from Scotland in the 1920s, gives the beer its legendary effervescence.
