Founded by George Smith, who was the first to obtain a legal license to distill in the parish of Glenlivet after the Excise Act of 1823. Despite fierce local opposition, George's smooth, fruity malt set the standard for Speyside whisky and secured its reputation worldwide.
The Glenlivet Distillery was established in 1824 in the remote Livet Valley of Speyside, Scotland, where the pure water of Josie's Well feeds the copper pot stills. Its signature lantern-shaped stills were designed by its founder to draw up light, complex spirit vapors.
