The maker
Morinaga & Company, founded in Tokyo in 1899 by Taichiro Morinaga, sought to bring Western-style confectionery to Japan. In 1975, the company introduced Hi-Chew, a unique candy designed as an edible chewing gum that would be culturally polite to swallow.
