The story behind it
Founded in 1974 by brothers Bill and Ross Spence in Auckland, Matua started as a revolutionary passion project to see what Marlborough's unique terroir could do. Today, the winery is celebrated worldwide for pioneering the modern style of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
Matua is credited with planting the very first Sauvignon Blanc vines in New Zealand during the mid-1970s. The cool-climate maritime conditions of Marlborough provide the ideal environment for producing wines with distinctive, concentrated tropical fruit flavors.
