The story behind it
The brand was launched by Henry Behar in collaboration with the Fonseca family to introduce American consumers to a friendly, accessible style of European wine. Named after the painting 'Las Lanzas' by Velázquez, Lancers quickly became a mid-century cultural icon and remains a benchmark for approachable Portuguese table wines.
Crafted by José Maria da Fonseca, one of Portugal's oldest and most prestigious wineries, Lancers was first created in 1944. Its iconic opaque stone bottle was originally designed to protect the delicate wine from light damage during transatlantic transport.
